Solar costs · Manchester & the North West
How much do solar panels cost in Manchester?
The honest answer: most Manchester homes pay between £5,500 and £11,000 fully installed, at 0% VAT. Here's the full breakdown by system size — what drives the price, what a battery adds, and how to tell a fair quote from an overpriced one.
Installed prices, 2026
Solar panel costs by system size
Fully installed prices including panels, inverter, scaffolding, certification and 0% VAT — based on current UK market data and our own installs across Greater Manchester.
1–2 bed terrace or flat
3kW
7–8 panels
£5,500 – £7,000
Smaller roofs and lower usage; often the right fit for Manchester terraces.
3-bed semi
4kW
9–10 panels
£6,500 – £8,500
The most common UK install — the typical Manchester semi-detached system.
4-bed detached
6kW
14–15 panels
£8,500 – £11,000
Higher usage homes, EV owners, or roofs with room to spare.
With a home battery
Add roughly £2,500–£5,000 for a 5–10kWh battery. A larger 8kW system with battery storage typically lands at £13,500–£17,500 installed.
Price ranges reflect current UK market data from MCS installation statistics and published 2026 price guides (DESNZ solar PV cost data, BestBuilders 2026 guide). Your quote depends on your roof — the ranges are honest, but they're ranges.
What changes your quote
Four things decide your actual price
Two houses on the same Manchester street can get quotes £2,000 apart. It's almost always one of these.
Roof and access
Scaffolding is a real cost. A straightforward two-storey semi is cheaper than a tall townhouse or a roof that needs a cherry picker. We survey before we quote.
Orientation and shading
South-facing is ideal, but east–west split arrays work well in Manchester and often suit family usage patterns better. Chimneys and trees change panel layout and kit.
Battery storage
A home battery typically adds £2,500–£5,000 depending on capacity. Worth it when most of your usage is in the evening — less so if you're home all day.
Your existing electrics
Older consumer units sometimes need upgrading, and three-phase supplies change the inverter choice. Both are quick for us to check on a survey.
Is it worth it?
What Manchester homes actually save
Manchester gets slightly less sunshine than the south of England — around 850–950kWh per kW installed per year — but with electricity at today's prices the maths still works. A well-sized 4kW system on a typical semi typically covers 40–60% of a household's electricity, more with a battery shifting solar into the evening.
Most of the homes we assess see payback in six to ten years on panels alone, quicker when a time-of-use tariff and battery are set up properly. We put your real numbers in writing before you commit to anything.
- 0% VAT on residential solar and batteries until at least 2027
- Smart Export Guarantee pays you for what you send back to the grid
- Time-of-use tariffs can cut battery payback by years
How to spot a fair quote
- 01
It follows a survey
Any quote given without looking at your roof, shading and consumer unit is a guess. Ours always follows a proper look.
- 02
It names the kit
Panel and inverter makes and models should be on the quote, not '400W panels'. Kit quality explains half the price spread.
- 03
It breaks out scaffolding
Scaffolding should be a visible line. Hidden 'access costs' are where quotes get padded.
- 04
It's MCS certified
Without MCS certification you can't get the Smart Export Guarantee. Check any installer on the MCS register.
